Our Mission
The Vietnam Health Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting quality healthcare and reaching out to international communities through volunteer services. We incorporate volunteering locally and internationally to provide unique experiences to our members.
The organization is open to all UW-Madison students of all majors as well as members of the community
Our goals for the 2007-2008 academic year include:
- Bringing awareness of healthcare problems in Vietnam to UW-Madison.
- Becoming affiliated with Vietnamese hospitals.
- Interacting with doctors and patients during our trip in December 2007.
- Buying medical supplies and toys for children to improve hospital care.
For this year, VHP's goal is to raise $5,000 by May 2007.
Why Vietnam?
The healthcare system in Vietnam faces many challenges. The main challenge stems from the poverty that exists. 29% of the country lives under the poverty line with higher rates in rural areas. Poverty limits the accessibility of citizens to primary care facilities.
Along with the citizens’ lack of access, many hospitals lack integral resources.
With a great demand for healthcare, hospitals are often overwhelmed with patients. Resources, supplies, and funding are stretched, resulting in low quality care and slow advancements in technology and care.
What Can We Do?
VHP’s journey to Vietnam in the winter of 2007 will strive to identify the needs of hospitals in urban and rural areas and work to meet them.
Shadowing doctors, playing with children, and helping caretakers with patients, students will have hands-on interaction to improve the lives of others
Using our funds, VHP will improve hospital care by buying needed medical supplies, building playrooms for children, and educating patients about nutrition, hygiene, and basic medical care.
